Romanian soprano Irina Ungureanu and pianist Verona Maier will perform Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter journey) lied series in two concerts in Bucharest. The first concert is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, at 19:00, in the Small Hall of the Romanian Atheneum, while the second is planned for the next day, Wednesday, January 21, at the same hour, at Suțu Palace.
Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) Austrian Romantic composer who wrote more than 700 lieds, on lyrics by Müller, Goethe, Schiller, Heine, Mayrhofer and Rellstab. Some of them were conceived in series and the best known are The beautiful miller, Winter journey, Swan Song. The Winterreise series, opus number 89, was completed in autumn 1827 and includes 24 lieds on the lyrics of poet Wilhelm Müller.
Born in 1984, soprano Irina Ungureanu is a graduate of the Conservatory in Zürich. Among others, she performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2002, at World Music Days in Luxembourg in 2002 and she has collaborated with acclaimed contemporary vocal artists. Her work focuses on old music, lieds, oratorio, Romanian folkloric music and improvisation. More details on Irina are available on her official website.
Verona Maier is a professor at the chamber music department of the Music University in Bucharest and is a member of the Old Music Studio, a Romanian chamber group. Since her debut in 1970, she has held concerts in over 15 countries, took part in the recording of seven national and international albums and ensured consultancy for the production for several Romanian movie soundtracks. In 2014, she was awarded by the Romanian Presidency with the “Cultural Merit” medal.
