Mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin will hold a series of concerts in Romania on December 2 and 5, in a tour organized by the Office of Public Diplomacy of the US Embassy, a series of lectures on American music and culture and the rights of persons with disabilities in Bucharest and Braşov, and a canto master at the Faculty of Music in Braşov. The mezzo-soprano will be special guest at the Disability Gala to be broadcasted by Romanian Television’s Channel 1 at a date to be announced later.
Laurie Rubin was described by The New York Times as having a “fascinating artistic power”, and her voice as having ” tones that are rich, deep and dense as the earth”. Los Angeles Times had only praising words for “her charismatic, multi-textured mastery”, pointing out that Laurie Rubin “seems to have a special intuition for the subtleties of power and sound.”
At the concerts, she will perform „Memory” and other well-known pieces written by George Gershwin, Leonard Cohen or Georges Bizet. Concerts are scheduled for December 2 in Bucharest, at the Jewish Community Centre (Centrul Comunitar Evreiesc, 18 Popa Soare St.), at 18:30, and for December 5 in Braşov, at Sala Patria (Sala muzicii de Cameră, 50A 15 Noiembrie Blvd.), at 18:30. Entrance is free of charge, based on inviations available at the headquarters of the cultural institutions above.
